IP Rate & NEMA

EN 60529 outlines an international classification system for the sealing effectiveness of enclosures of electrical equipment against the intrusion into the equipment of foreign bodies (i.e. tools, dust, fingers) and moisture. This classification system utilizes the letters "IP" ("Ingress Protection") followed by two or three digits. (A third digit is sometimes used. An "x" is used for one of the digits if there is only one class of protection; i.e. IPX4 which addresses moisture resistance only.)
IP explanation
IP54 =
IP Letter Code _________________IP
1st Digit ___________________________5
2st Digit _________________________________4
1st Digit Protection from solid objects 2st Digit Protection from moisture
0 Non protected 0 Non protected
1

Protection against accidental or inadvertent contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by a large surface of the human body, e/g/ a hand, but not protection against deliberate access to such parts. Protection against ingress
Protected against solid objects greater than 50 mm

see note

1

Protection against drops of condensed water. Drops of condensed water falling on the enclosure shall have no harmful effect.
Protected against dripping water

see note

2

Protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by fingers. Protection against ingress of medium size solid foreign bodies.
Protected against solid objects greater than 12 mm

see note

2

Protection against drops of liquid. Drops of falling liquid shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at any angle up to 15°; from the vertical.
Protected against dripping water then tilted up to 15°

see note

3

Protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by tools, wires or such objects of thickness greater than 2.55 mm. Protection against ingress of small size solid foreign bodies.
Protected against solid objects greater than 2.5 mm

see note

3

Protection against rain. Water falling in rain at any angle equal to or smaller than 60°; with respect to the vertical shall have no harmful effect.
Protected against spraying water

see note

4

Protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by tools, wires or such objects of thickness greater than 1.mm. Protection against ingress of small size solid foreign bodies.
Protected against solid objects greater than 1.0 mm

see note

4

Protection against splashing. Liquid splashed from any direction shall have no harmful effect.
Protected against splashing water

see note

5

Complete protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure. Protection against harmful deposits of dust. The ingress of dust is not totally prevented but dust cannot enter in an amount sufficient to interfere with satisfactory operation of the enclosed equipment.
Dust protected

see note

5

Protection against water jets. Water projected by nozzle from any direction under stated conditions shall have no harmful effect.
Protected against water jets

see note

6

Complete protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure. Protection against ingress of dust.
Dust tight

see note

6

Protection against conditions on ship decks (deck watertight equipment). Water from heavy seas shall not enter the enclosures under prescribed conditions.
Protected against heavy seas

see note

Note: EN 60529 does not specify sealing effectiveness against the following: mechanical damage of the equipment; certain types of moisture conditions, e.g. those that are produced by condensation; corrosive vapours; funus; vermin
7

Protection against immersion in water. It shall not be possible for water to enter the enclosure under stated conditions of pressure and time.
Protected against against the effects of immersion

see note

8

Protection against indefinite immersion in water under specified pressure. It shall not be possible for water to enter the enclosure.
Protected against submersion

see note

NEMA Rating
NEMA 1 Type 1 enclosures are intended for indoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against contact with the enclosed equipment or locations where unusual service conditions do not exist.
NEMA 2 Type 2 enclosures are intended for indoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against limited amounts of falling water and dirt.
NEMA 3 Type 3 enclosures are intended for outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust, rain, and sleet; and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA 3R Type 3R enclosures are intended for outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against falling rain; and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA 4 Type 4 enclosures are intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust and rain, splashing water, and hose directed water; and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA 4X Type 4X enclosures are intended for indoor and outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against corrosion, windblown dust and rain, splashing water, and hose-directed water; and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA 6 Type 6 enclosures are intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against the entry of water during temporary submersion at a limited depth; and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA 7 Type 7 enclosures are for indoor use in locations classified as Class I, Groups A, B, C, or D, as defined in the National Electrical Code.

Type 7 enclosures shall be capable of withstanding the pressures resulting from an internal explosion of specified gases, and contain such an explosion sufficiently that an explosive gas-air mixture existing in the atmosphere surrounding the enclosure will not be ignited. Enclosed heat generating devices shall not cause external surfaces to reach temperatures capable of igniting explosive gas-air mixtures in the surrounding atmosphere. Enclosures shall meet explosion, hydro-static, and temperature design tests.
NEMA 9 Type 9 enclosures are intended for indoor use in locations classified as Class II, Groups E, F, or G, as defined in the National Electrical Code.

Type 9 enclosures shall be capable of preventing the entrance of dust. Enclosed heat generating devices shall not cause external surfaces to reach temperatures capable of igniting or discoloring dust on the enclosure or igniting dust-air mixtures in the surrounding atmosphere. Enclosures shall meet dust penetration and temperature design tests, and aging of gaskets (if used).
NEMA 12 Type 12 enclosures are intended for indoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against dust, falling dirt, and dripping noncorrosive liquids.
NEMA 13 Type 13 enclosures are intended for indoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against dust, spraying of water, oil, and noncorrosive coolant.
